Central Florida Earth Day 2008 (CFED) takes place April 19 and 20, 2008 in Downtown Orlando. Grassroots organizations and municipal agencies will be hosting events throughout the weekend to help local residents reconnect with the environment around them and give something back. We hope this event will serve as a catalyst to spur the community into action.
The highest
profile event of the weekend will be a FREE festival on Saturday
the 19th. This celebration will feature three music stages with a diverse lineup of musical guests including the Token Gamblers and SKIP from Nonsense, as well as children's favorite Mr. Richard. Also featured are environmental workshops, demonstrations, children's music and other
educational entertainment.
Given that many of the other events happening in Central Florida are on Sunday
the 20th, citizens will have an immediate option to take
action to positively enhance their surroundings. These other events
include plantings, clean-ups, habitat restorations, and more.
More can be found on these activities on the Events Page.
Earth Day is presented by the Florida School of
Holistic Living, a 501c3 nonprofit educational organization committed to cultivating
sustainable community through philosophy-in-practice education on natural
health, spiritual arts, and sustainable living. The school's educational
center on North Thornton Avenue in downtown Orlando (adjacent to Dandelion
Communitea Café) is home to the Community Herb Garden, an eco-sustainable model for organic gardening including recycled building materials and a commercial worm
composter. The center also features Evolve, a sustainable resource store, including
local, organic, vegan, and earth-friendly products for home, health, and garden and sustainable lifestyle educational materials. As well,
the school is sponsor of the Local Harvest Community Food Co-op, a cooperative
buying club that provides affordable access to locally grown organic produce and connects farmers to families to support the local economy.
Thank you to our sponsors, including Orlando Brewing and Whole Foods. Please see all sponsors on our Sponsor page. Also sponsoring Central Florida Earth Day 2008 is Vegetarians of Central Florida (VegCF), the proud host of last year's Central Florida Earth Day. VegCF is a nonprofit social and educational group for vegetarians, vegans, and those interested in learning more about the vegetarian lifestyle. The organization hosts educational events, social gatherings, and restaurant visits. VegCF is host of the annual VegFest event in Loch Haven Park, a gathering of thousands of local vegetarian-enthusiasts featuring over 100 vendors and educational exhibits.
